If you have read Book 12, you know that I asked something difficult of you. I asked you to sit with me in the pause. To resist the urge to rush forward. Book 13 is the answer to that request.
Not the comfortable answer. Not the one where holding pays off immediately and the sacrifice is immediately visible and the cost is immediately honoured. The honest answer. The one where what arrives after the pause is not relief but the full weight of what the pause was preparing you for.
Book 13 — The God Breaker, Part 2: Cataclysm is the most demanding volume I have written. Not in length. In willingness. In the willingness to write beings making irreversible choices, to write a world genuinely pressing against the limits of its own coherence, to write characters who are not tested by what attacks them but by what asks them — persistently, sophisticatedly, at the level below where argument can be deflected — whether their certainty was ever real.
The Most Dangerous Question
I have faced arguments like this in my own life. Moments when the voice of despair spoke not with cruelty but with logic. When giving up seemed not like weakness but like wisdom. When the case for surrender was made so clearly, so reasonably, that continuing to fight felt almost presumptuous.
What saved me in those moments was not strength — I had no strength left. It was not hope — hope had grown thin and unreliable. What saved me was something smaller and more stubborn: the simple refusal to become someone who had given up. Not because I believed giving up was wrong. But because giving up would have meant agreeing with a version of reality that I could not accept, even when I could not refute it.
This is what the warriors face in Book 13. Not an enemy they can defeat with force. An argument perfectly constructed to dissolve the conviction that made force worth exerting. They are invited — not forced — to become people who no longer believe what they have always believed.
Some of them hold immediately. Some hold at cost. Some discover that what they thought was certainty was something more fragile — and have to find something below the certainty to stand on.
That something, I have come to understand, is not hope. It is not strength. It is identity. The refusal to become someone you cannot recognise. That refusal is what this book is about.
On Certainty
Certainty, as I have learned it, is not a state. It is a practice. It requires renewal. It is tested not in the absence of doubt but in the presence of it. And the most important truth I can offer about certainty — the truth this entire book tries to live — is this:
Certainty does not require proof. It requires only the decision, made again and again, to remain who you are.
I carry truths like that. Small ones. Fragile ones. Truths about love and meaning and the value of continuing when continuation offers no guarantee. I hold them not because I can prove they are true. I hold them because releasing them would mean becoming someone who does not hold such things. And that person is not me.
The Seven will face this same choice. And the story will follow wherever their choices lead.

Thirteen books. If you are here, you have held with me through something that many readers stepped away from. You trusted the story enough to remain uncertain, to sit in discomfort, to follow characters through seasons that did not resolve cleanly or quickly.
I cannot repay that. I can only continue to give the story everything it deserves.
