For a long time, I chased the wrong things.
I am not embarrassed to admit this. I think most honest people reach a point where they can say it plainly, without drama, as simply as stating a fact about the weather: I was looking in the wrong direction. And in the midst of all that chasing, something quiet and essential was being drowned out.
Book 08 — Of The Dragon Warriors: The Game of Shadows was written in the space after I stopped chasing. After something shifted — not dramatically, not overnight, but in the way that real shifts happen, which is slowly and then undeniably. I stopped performing and started inhabiting. And the light I found there was not new. It had always been present. I had simply been facing away from it.
What the Game of Shadows Actually Is
The game of shadows in this book is not only an external adversary. It is the internal one.
The shadow that argues you are not enough. That watches your progress and immediately focuses on the gap rather than the distance covered. That whispers that others see through you — not to what you are, but to what you are not. This shadow does not need to be loud. It only needs to be persistent.
The fellowship of warriors in Book 08 faces an enemy that operates this way. Not through overwhelming force, but through sustained misdirection. The enemy in the game of shadows does not need you to collapse. It needs you to keep looking in the wrong direction, keep measuring yourself by the wrong measure, keep missing the source of light that is right where you are standing.
The Warriors Together
This is the first book where all seven warriors move as a genuinely unified force — not in theory, but in practice. And what I found, writing it, is that unity does not look like agreement on everything. It does not look like the absence of tension. It looks like people who trust each other enough to act, even when they don't have all the information, even when the path is unclear, because they know — from evidence, from shared history, from the accumulation of all the books that came before this one — that they are not alone in what they are carrying.
That trust is not given. It is built. It is the product of every choice made in Books 01 through 07 — every moment someone showed up, every cost paid, every truth spoken when a comfortable silence would have been easier.
On Finding Your Light Within the Madness
I believe that the light available to us in difficult seasons is never the dramatic, cinematic illumination we imagine when we picture rescue. It is smaller. It is the specific clarity that arrives when you stop looking for someone else's map and start paying attention to what is actually in front of you.
It is the project you kept returning to even when no one encouraged it. The relationship you chose to invest in even when the outcome was uncertain. The version of yourself you kept being, quietly, despite everything arguing you should become something else.
That is the light. It was always there.
What Book 08 Signals in the Saga
This is the book where the saga changes gear. The individual warrior arcs are coming from their individual directions. The fellowship is formed and tested. What begins here is the true convergence — the movement toward a confrontation that the saga has been building toward since Book 01. The game of shadows is not an interlude. It is the moment when the enemy reveals that everything that preceded it was, in some sense, a preparation.
And the warriors — and the reader — are as prepared as they have ever been.
