There are books that rush forward, carried by the momentum of what has just happened. And then there are books that stop. Not because the story has paused, but because the story has arrived somewhere that requires stillness in order to be fully received.
Book 12 — The God Breaker, Part 1: Revelations is the second kind.
I could not write this book until I understood why it had to be slower. Why it had to carry more weight per page, more silence per chapter. And what I came to understand is this: some revelations cannot be absorbed while running. Some things — the large, foundational, reality-altering things — require you to stop moving and receive what is being delivered.
What Cannot Be Fixed
There is a particular kind of distress that I find harder than any other. Not the acute crisis, which at least demands a response and therefore keeps you occupied. The slow recognition. The gradual understanding that something you were counting on to remain stable is quietly, steadily, not remaining stable.
I wrote the author's note for Book 12 during a period in my own life when I was experiencing exactly this. Something I had trusted — I will not say what — was revealing that it required more of me than I had been offering. Not through a crisis. Through the slow, undeniable accumulation of small evidence that something needed to change.
What I learned in that period is the difference between fixing and holding. Fixing implies a resolution — a return to the previous state, a repair that restores what was. Holding is something different. It is the decision to remain present with something that may not resolve, to continue showing up for it, to keep asking what it needs without requiring that it give you certainty in return.
The warriors in Book 12 are asked to hold. Not to fix. The revelation they face is not one that has a solution. It has a response. And the response begins with complete understanding of what they are facing — which is what this volume delivers.
Why Revelations Come Before Cataclysm
Book 12 and Book 13 were written together, released together, and must be experienced together. But I chose to make Book 12 the place where understanding arrives before action is required.
I did this because I believe that the right action requires full understanding. That rushing toward a response before you comprehend what you are responding to is one of the most common and most costly mistakes that individuals — and fellowships — make. The instinct to act is honourable. But the discipline to pause, to receive, to understand before moving — that is the rarer and more difficult practice.
The warriors exercise that discipline here. And the reader is asked to exercise it alongside them.
What the God Breaker Actually Is
I will not reveal plot. But I will say this: the enemy that reveals itself in Book 12 is more sophisticated than anything the saga has depicted before, because it does not attack what you have. It attacks what you are. It targets the agreements between things — the silent understandings that allow systems to function, that allow reality to cohere, that allow the world to remain the world.
This is the most frightening kind of adversary. And it requires the most specific kind of response. Not force. Understanding. Not strength. Clarity.
Book 12 is where that clarity begins.
For Those in the Pause
If this note reaches you in a period of your own life that feels like pause — like nothing is moving, like you are being asked to wait without being given a reason — I want to offer you this:
Some pauses are not delays. Some pauses are the actual work. The receiving. The understanding. The preparation for a response that can only be right if it comes from a place of complete clarity rather than understandable urgency.
Hold. It costs more than acting. And it is sometimes the only thing that makes acting matter.
